TX6 - Next Generation LED Watch

In a follow up to a watch we covered over a year ago, LED-Watch.com have the latest in 70’s retro red LED powered timepieces for all.

The TX6 RED utilises the latest CMOS module complete with an original 70’s style LED display and is a great combination of authentic retro 1970’s style timepiece, and modern electronics.

The first LED digital watches were introduced in 1971 under the Pulsar brand, by 1973 they had taken the world by storm. After appearing in the James Bond Movie ‘Live and Let Die’ many more manufacturers have produced LED watches until they became as recognisable as the lava lamp, millions of LED watches were sold and then with the introduction of Seiko’s LCD watch in 1979, LED almost became extinct overnight, rarely to ever return since the 1970’s.

LED-Watch.com are cashing in on the retro boat with multiple watch designs - with this Gun Metal TX6 being a limited edition. The dark grey shiny finish looks understated and great on the arm - there’s no bling to attract attention, and the display is clear and simple. As with previous watches i continue to be annoyed about the need to press a button in order to find out the time. I understand this is to conserve battery power, and that’s why LCD is better for digital displays. I guess the button pressing is just in keeping with the 70’s feeling!

The electronics cover all the bare essentials for a watch, time - in 12 and 24 hour format, a separate seconds counter, and the date. Strangely there is no way to check the year via the button 1 cycle, yet the year is set when setting the date!

Available now from LED-Watch.com for 49.99 delivered.

SONY MAY THIN OUT PS3 PRODUCT LINE

According to sources following the development of the Playstation 3, Best Buy is discontinuing the sale of both the 80GB and 60GB models of the Playstation 3. Only the 40GB model, which sells for $399 and is not backwards compatible with earlier Playstation games will remain.

The rumor stems from a post by PS3Fanboy on his blog citing an anonymous Best Buy employee who apparently fed him this internal memo:

“The 80GB version of the PS3 is going closeout and won’t be replaced at this time,”… “It will come off the planogram on Jan. 28. The 60GB version should already be gone from stores. Only the 40GB version of PS3 will be sold in Best Buy stores at this time.”

The internal communiqué also goes on to confirm that the 40GB model is not backwards compatible and that Sony has no plans to add to the existing product line. If true, this would mark the return of initial criticisms of the PS3 that it wasn’t compatible with previous Playstation games and cited this as one reason, along with it’s ridiculously high price, not to invest in the latest game console in the first place. Lagging sales prompted Sony to lose nearly a billion dollars on the PS3 until they recently reduced the price of all Playstation 3 models, a move that has enjoyed brisk sales through the holiday season. But if this memo reflects a shift in Sony policy, the PS3’s return to glory may be short lived.

Lightsaber Desk Lamp, Cool!

This is a must have for any self respecting Star Wars office worker, the lightsaber desk lamp.

Show your allegiance with style, you can buy a red lightsaber for those preferring the dark side or green for the office goodie.

Must admit I can’t believe it’s taken this long before somebody thought of making a lamp from the Jedis favourite weapon. You can light and decorate your desk for $19.99 from Think Geek.

DIY rollable keyboard exudes simplicity

Make no mistake, there are plenty of outfits out there looking to snap up your loose change in exchange for a pre-built rollup keyboard, but if you just can’t stand that ‘board that came bundled in with your last pre-fab PC, we think there’s a better alternative. Apparently, all you have to do is remove the inner membrane from an unwanted set of keys, make sure the control board is accurately reassembled onto said membrane and cut out letters in the font of your choosing to keep you on track when your touch typing skills begin to fade. That’s it — an über-painless, amazingly easy and absolutely inelegant method of crafting your own rollable keyboard. Hit up the read link for all, oh, five steps.

Verizon, AT&T Respect Your SMS Privacy [Privacy]

Verizon and AT&T have both gone on record saying they do not record SMS communications. The privacy debate is one that, understandably, gets emotions stirred, but you can all rest a little easy knowing the official stances of two of the major cellular networks.

Erica Sevilla, a Verizon spokeswoman, said:

I think people can feel comfortable we’re not storing information that can later be used against them. Unless you have something stored on your phone or on a recipients’ phone, it does not stay on our network for a long period.

AT&T said they do not store SMS messages beyond 72 hours, which are only kept for delivery purposes. In both cases, once deleted from the system, there is no conceivable way to check your text message communications short of physically going through your phone.

You may want to breathe a collective sigh of relief, but Rebecca Jeschke, spokeswoman for the San Francisco-based Electronic Frontier Foundation, seems to think otherwise:

“We trust so much of our communications and thoughts, even, to these third parties who are capturing this information and storing it in various ways. It’s time for us to think about it.”

Gosh, we just want our private willy jokes remaining private. After all, it’s not fair everyone knowing about Mark’s miniscule member. [AP]

Learn to tokidoki at Lynda.com

Fans of tokidoki might be excited to know that the Italian artist behind tokidoki, Simone Legno, has contributed a training course on his Adobe Illustrator methods to the Lynda.com training library. Simone Legno’s story is an inspiring one for any character artist - a set of characters he once created on his personal website exploded into an enormously popular brand, with products for girls (and women) bearing images of his characters. You can shop for tokidoki products (some quite pricey, like this Trenino laptop bag, which goes for $298). Teenage girls I know swoon when they come across tokidoki bags, cosmetics, jewelry and clothing. It’s a phenomenon.

Check out tokidoki: Creative Inspiration on Lynda.com. Lynda.com offers a fairly comprehensive list of online video courses on Web technology and software. If you’re not already a member of Lynda.com, you can sign up for a monthly or yearly plan - it starts at just $25 for one month of unlimited access to their video/audio training training.

Cowon price drops abound

Call it fate or call it luck, but regardless of what you deem it, the latest wave of Cowon price drops will certainly save you a few bucks. Judging by listings at JetMall, Cowon has slashed dollars off of price tags attached to a variety of its devices, including $50 off of the luscious Q5W, $20 from the A3 30GB and some $90 from the 16GB iAUDIO 7. What’s more, the entire Q5W lineup now comes with a free GPS cradle and a warm fuzzy feeling to boot. So if you’ve been holding off on treating yourself to a new Cowon, we’d say now would be a fairly decent time to pull the trigger and indulge.

Via’s New Low-Power Mobile Chips Can Run Crysis

Crysis running on this year’s ultramobile PCs? Maybe not. But Via’s Isaiah, its new low-lower chips from subsidiary Centaur, pushes a game that didn’t sell well because nothing could run the damn thing. HardOCP got to see it in person, presumably wedded to a beefy GPU.

"Without a doubt, what was most impressive was seeing a 1.8GHz CN processor running Crysis. While I am not going to go out of on a limb and say it was the best Crysis experience you might have, there is no doubt that this low power “UMPC” processor was more than up to the task that I would never ever guessed possible on a VIA/Centaur CPU."

"But will it run Crysis?" is the new metric for UMPC-class processors!
