You can file this one squarely in wild rumors and speculation department, but at least one analyst is now saying that NVIDIA could maybe, possibly be interested in acquiring arch rival AMD. That surprising and slightly hard to believe word comes from Doug Friedman of American Technology Research, who says that the “Intel/AMD roadmap of integration of the CPU/GPU could pose a risk to NVIDIA,” and that buying AMD would propel NVIDIA into a “formidable competitor for Intel.” As X-bit Labs points out, however, there is the little matter of a cross-licensing agreement between Intel and AMD, which would prevent AMD from transferring any of Intel’s technologies to a third party, effectively making it impossible for the new company to produce its own x86 CPUs, to say nothing of the potential antitrust issues involved.

Merely hours after we first wondered where all those CloudBooks were on launch day, here they come — fashionably late, of course. As of this moment, Everex’s CE1200V is up on NewEgg’s site, but is still sporting a “deactivated item” status. Nevertheless, Packard Bell’s XS20-006 (as it’s so eloquently dubbed across the pond) is currently for sale at PC World for £349.99 ($686). And yeah, there’s a number of unboxing shots pleading for your attention in the link below, so what exactly are you waiting for?
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

So I got this box in the mail that said N-GAGE on it. But the cell phone inside didn’t look like a taco. I was confused. I tried talking into the side of the slider — it worked just like a cell phone should. What’’s this N-GAGE moniker for? Turns out, N-Gage is no longer the name of a specific phone—it’s a platform, meaning that in order to wear the storied (er, buried?) badge a handset must meet certain performance criteria when it comes to mobile gaming. And the phone in question, Nokia’s N81 8GB, is the first so-branded model to be released in the US. This handset has a 3D graphics accelerator, super-bright 16-million-color screen, and physical controls geared toward gaming. There are buttons on opposite ends of the device, mimicking the feel you get when you pick up say, an Xbox 360 controller. In the software department, the N81 runs the graying S60 operating system, and comes with a suite of demo games that cost about $10 to activate. Really? Come on guys, the new N-GAGE is supposed to keep us engaged not enraged. —Joe Brown
WIRED 3G and Wi-Fi, which should be standard on every phone, thank you very much. Gaming controls work as advertised, with nary a mis-pressed button in several straphanger gaming sessions. 8 gigs is, like, plenty of memory. Sleek design and excellent build quality. Unlocked. Autofocus-free 2-megapizzle camera is paparazzi-fast.
TIRED Paparazzi-fast camera seems like it’s trying especially hard not to focus. Fancy piano-black screen is the opposite of antireflective. Topside button is built around the speaker, and squeaks if you move the phone around during a conversation (= always). Flat, nearly featureless keypad is impossible to use without looking down. Yo Nokia, why can’t you include at least one free game with my $630 phone? And where the @#$! is Snakes?!

Motorola has committed the sin of bling with the MOTOPURE H12 Bluetooth headset. The gold and diamond monsters top out at KRW 16,100,000 ($17,000) and “feature” 18 carat gold and 184 diamonds. How on Earth is something so weighed down with ice going to stay in your ear?
We see so much jewel encrusted crap here at the Gadget Lab that I started wondering why it gets made. Perhaps people buy these monstrosities, but I doubt it. More likely it’s a publicity grab from the manufacturers, and being the haters of conspicuous consumption that we are, we fall for it every time.

Looks like the iGame will have to wait - at least for the forseeable future. Word on the street has it that Apple won’t be developing a game system anytime soon, as Apple will maintain the iPod’s position as the “gateway” for all Apple gaming initiatives. Apple thinks that the iPod is good enough for games thanks to its OpenGL Embedded Systems software library, so they won’t need a faster device. I beg to differ, as there are only so many (few) genres of simple games that people will play on an iPod, and the lack of epic titles will definitely be a sore point for many a hardcore gamer. The DS fills this niche particularly well with its fair share of casual, short-and-sweet games as well as long, drawn out but absorbing entertainment software. If you own an Apple ipod, how often do you play games on it?

After an initial release delay of 16 days, today is the day that Everex is scheduled to begin shipping the Cloudbook, but sadly it is not looking that good. Everex still has February 15 listed as the shipping date, but a quick check of the few sites that are going to offer the Cloudbook are not giving us anything positive.
Wal-Mart still has not added the Cloudbook to their website, ZaReason has it listed as “out of stock” and a listing on NewEgg is showing it as a “deactivated item.” Lets hope that Everex does not end up with another delay, should it become available it will retail for $399.

The LG Rumor from Sprint will soon be available on Alltel Wireless, although it will experience a change in name. This time, the Rumor has transformed into the Scoop, although you can’t eat any ice cream with this. The candybar LG Scoop features a sliding QWERTY keyboard, support for Axcess Voice2TXT that changes voicemail into text messages, a 1.3 megapixel camera, a microSD memory card slot and MP3 playback. If you’re interested in picking up the scoop, it retails for $60 after a $40 mail-in rebate. Oh yeah, and you gotta sell your soul to Alltel for two years, too.
