That great perpetrator of worldly ills, the cosmic ray, has at last met its match. Intel has patented the concept of an on-chip detector of cosmic rays which would auto-correct for soft errors caused by the cosmic ray’s interference. Apparently Intel is concerned that cosmic rays — those perky particles from space that blast through the Earth’s atmosphere and tamper with your precious bodily fluids — are going to become “a major limiter of computer reliability in the next decade” as chips get smaller and smaller. The rays have already been proved to interfere with electronics in small ways, so while Intel doesn’t have method for building an actual cosmic ray detector yet, they’re certainly getting a jump on the problem with this patent. We know we’ll certainly be sleeping better at night.

Data security in today’s work environment is of the utmost importance. In the worst case scenarios not having a backup of all recent data could spell doom for any PC user. HDD based solutions are available but they require almost an infrastructure of USB wires/ dongles at hand. The SanDisk FlashBack Adapter plugs into the ExpressCard slot found on many Windows laptops today. Into the adapter is plugged a SD or SDHC memory card, which is sold separately. These two items work in conjunction with user installed software on the laptop itself to offer real time backups of important files directly from the computer to the memory card.

Some USB gadget manufacturer somewhere decided to stick several USB objects together and slap a label on the product resulting in the USB Desk Assortment and Gift Set. What gadgets are included?
There’s a light so you can see in the dark, a warmer to keep that java fresh and warm, a lighted cup to stick stuff in and a mini vacuum to pick up those crumbs from your flavor saver. There’s also a button, but whatever you do, don’t press it. Don’t.
Gimmie!
Suggested Price: $14.99

We saw the Eee PC pick up an incredible, almost cult like following and with that came more mods and hacks than most of us could even imagine. It has taken some time, the Cloudbook has gotten off to a slow start, but that seems to be coming to an end. A decent community is starting to get going behind the Cloudbook, albeit not as large or devoted as the Eee PC has, but still its getting there and I am sure it will continue to grow with time. With the community getting behind the Cloudbook we are beginning to see some cool new mods, along with some tips and tricks that make the gOS-based ultra-portable a little more user friendly.
Being dubbed the “Dreambook” a user by the name of Azazel has added some very cool mods including a touchscreen display, internal 4-port USB hub, a GPS unit and 4GB’s of internal memory via a flash memory stick. In this case the internal webcam suffered and was removed due to the need for some extra space, but with all those other goodies on the inside I am sure its very easy to live without a 0.3-megapixel webcam. Very good news on the “internal” Cloudbook front, according to Azazel “there is a lot of room to work with!” Sounds good to us, while I am not quite brave enough to tear into mine, I am excited to see what the future brings.
If you are interested in the Cloudbook or looking for some cool stuff the user forums over at Cloudbooker is a great place to check out the budding community.

Asus has just released a new travel mouse that in design is similar to a large tube of lipstick or a block from the game Jenga, with it’s miniature design and compact buttons the MS71 still allows for the basic functions of every mouse with two buttons and a scroll wheel. If you look closer you’ll find the the back portion of this little guy pops off and plugs into your computer which acts as the wireless transmitter for the mouse, and also at the same time acts as a thumb drive. The storage capacity of this device is unclear at this point but with the increasing storage in micro devices these days I would not be surprised to see a few gigs in there. Personally I’m wondering how practical this travel mouse really is, I could see maybe for very light use and for people with smaller hands and such but for someone like me with larger hands I don’t see this playing into my life any time soon.

It’s a crazy, mixed-up world we live in. If we aren’t worrying about global warming or peace in the middle east, we have to be on the lookout for scorned women setting large quantities of mobile devices on fire. A certain Mrs. Wang is guilty of that latter offense. The 37-year-old Chinese woman wasn’t particularly stoked about her husband walking out on their marriage, so she did the only reasonable thing that presented itself: rounded up the entire stock of more than 400 phones the couple had at their joint-owned cellphone shop, and set the entire lot ablaze — inside her home. The collection was valued at roughly 300,000 yuan, about $42,000 US. You might want to take this time to inform your significant other how sane, rational and sexy he or she is, while simultaneously removing all lighter fluid from your home. No gadget is safe!
