Remember Super 8? Once it was the home-movie maker’s format of choice, although, like the eight track, HD-DVD and film cameras, it is now all but dead. Which is why we’re very happy to see the Japanese Gakken come out with a brand new Super 8 projector.
More of an advanced toy than a professional tool (something reflected in the ¥8,000 or $80 price tag), the projector uses battery powered white LEDs and has a hand crank to spool the film. A great mixture of high and low tech. The only problem we can see is actually making the films in the first place.

As we expected, Apple just loosed the iphone into Ireland and Austria. €399 nabs the 8GB model while €499 takes the 16GB unit home. T-Mobile has the honors for Austria as it does in Germany while O2 carries the flag in Ireland as it does in the UK. Interestingly, Irish subscribers are not entitled to Visual Voicemail or free WiFi even though they are offered by O2 UK — neither country offers an unlimited data plan. Tsk tsk. Regardless, early adopters from those countries already had their unlocked iPhones months ago which makes the launch just a formality at this point.

You know, we’ll actually be a little sad when the endless legal battle between Nokia and Qualcomm actually comes to an end — but until then, we’re going to revel in all the dirt that comes out of having over a dozen simultaneous lawsuits going worldwide. Nokia now says that it owes Qualcomm nothing for its “early” CDMA patents, because it’s dropped a cool billion dollars into license payments for them over the past 15 years and those deals have expired, so it’s in the clear now. As you might expect, Qualcomm disagrees, and says that if Nokia wants to keep using its tech, it’s got to pay up — that’s on top of the estimated $500 million a year Nokia’s already paying Qualcomm for other patents. Guys, guys, why fight like this? What’s a couple billion a year between friends? Video summary of the entire dispute after the break.

Microwaveable Teddy Bear
Picture the scenario: a hot water bottle bursts, leaving the bed sheets soaked with boiling water and the occupants with pink feet. Conclusion: hot water, in rubber, in bed, is, quite frankly, a dangerous combination.

We can’t say we’ve really spent any huge amount of time wondering just how converged kitchen devices can become, but apparently, the designers at Pandigital have. Announced today, the Kitchen HDTV / Digital Cookbook / Digital Photo Frame (really, that’s the name) stays true to itself in three big ways: acting as a 15-inch 720p HDTV (ATSC / NTSC tuner included), a digital cookbook (with pre-loaded recipes and space for more) and a digital photo frame. Packed within, you’ll find half a gigabyte of memory, a built-in alarm clock and an integrated 6-in-1 media card reader. And considering all that sauce you’ll be slinging, you’ll be thrilled to know that it’s sealed with glass and boasts interchangeable faceplates to fit varying moods. Heck, this thing even handles Motion JPEG, MPEG4 and AVI files — not a bad way to spice up your kitchen (and spend $399.99), eh?

Kudos to Hideo Takano for taking the effort and time to cram in a Mac Mini’s innards into the chassis of a miniaturized Mac Pro while making additional modifications all over. Known as the mac mini Pro, you get a 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor running inside, accompanied by 2GB RAM. Heck, this imitation even houses a 500GB hard drive in a similar location as the actual Mac Pro.

New photos of the highly anticipated Samsung Glyde, a touchscreen and “gliding” QWERTY keyboard equipped smartphone from good ol’ Samsung, has been leaked by a user over at Howard Forums. The shots were taken with a better camera phone and now show more of the Samsung Glyde’s unique user interface and some of its apps. One photo (above) also confirms that it’s going to have a full HTML browser, which further “reinforces” its status as a possible contender to the Apple iphone (though Verizon says it will be the Voyager). Q1 2008 is quickly nearing its end and yet there has been no word from Verizon about the official release date yet.
Keep reading for a few more pics of the Glyde, and then click through to check out even more…

It seems Trent Reznor was right on with his latest album release for Ghosts I-IV. Based on “confirmed” reports the album has seen sales totaling 800,000 during the first week of its release, which in turn brought in $1.6 million. The 800,000 total included all forms of the album, including the free version which was Ghosts I, along with a combination of the other four available paid options. The paid options ranged in price from $5 for 36 DRM-free downloadable tracks to a $300 limited edition box set.
While this sounds like a great way for artists to release albums and it seems to offer a very successful business model, we cannot forget that Nine Inch Nails and Trent Reznor have been around for a long time now, with a very dedicated following. A new artist coming off the street, while they may have some success with a similar model, surely could not expect to raise $1.6 million over just one week. Overall well done NIN, Ghosts has become a favorite of mine.

Apple could actually have long term plans for their Apple TV set-top box, throwing in additional functionality so that it may transform into a full fledged digital video recording if these new filings with the US Patent and Trademark Office are anything to go by. The filings suggest a unique interface for the Apple TV, with the ability to browse and record live TV programming apart from downloading movies and TV shows sold through iTunes. I wonder if TiVo executives have already sat up and taken notice of this patent filing, as Cupertino could be a potential rival a few years down the road.
