Asus intro’s the Nova Lite Mini 2 PC

We have seen more than our fair share of mini PC’s hitting the market lately. This latest coming courtesy of Asus is their Nova Lite Mini 2L PC.

The Nova Lite Mini 2L PC is super small measuring in at 9.09 x 7.24 x 2-inches and lightweight at just 3.3-pounds, but Asus was still able to pack in a solid set of specs. The Nova Lite Mini 2L PC features an Intel Mobile CPU, 1 or 2GB of RAM, an 80 or 160GB hard drive, DVD Super Multi drive, Ethernet, four USB 2.0 ports, DVI and VGA, audio in, audio out, built-in Hi-Fi speakers and optional 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi.

It is only loaded with a single fan which according to Asus should lead “to an amazingly quiet and tranquil user experience” not to mention the power savings thanks to the CPU running at just 18W while in operation and only 5W when idle. Thanks to the energy savings on the Nova Lite Mini 2L PC you could hopefully cut down on some of those huge electric bills, and yeah, save more desk space with this one. Currently Asus has not announced and pricing information or a release date.

Glowing wall socket reminds you to conserve power by wasting power

If all the buzz marketing about recycling stuff and conserving power isn’t enough to win you over, this new concept for a glowing household power outlet might. It’s basically an ordinary power outlet that has a hidden LED that glows red when a plug stays connected for a certain amount of time (read: too long). The red glow becomes brighter as more energy is used, prompting you to kindly unplug and turn your stuff off. Now I have to admit, this is a great idea, but I can’t help but wonder if the creators of this concept ever realized that for this thing to work, it is going to need power. So from what I can see, this glowing socket tries to remind users to stop wasting power, when it’s wasting the power itself by shining with that bright red glow. I hope they find another way to power this thing or else, it’s going to be nothing but an oxymoron—an electric power saver that runs on electric power itself.

Go on eBay, and this guy’s life can be yours

Ian Usher, a 44-year old resident of Perth, Australia who’s originally from Darlington, England, is doing a big spring cleaning. For one week on eBay starting on June 22, he will auction off every part of his current life, from his house and all of its contents, even going as far as introducing the winner to his friends and to his job where he works for a rug importer. Although he loves his life in Perth and has the support of his employer and friends, everything sadly reminds him of his five-year marriage that broke up a year ago. After the auction, Usher wants to start all over in life with nothing but his wallet and his passport in his pockets, and do some traveling.

Let’s say you are interested in moving to Australia (or to the western city of Perth if you already live in Australia), how much would this set you back?  According to the valuation of the three-bedroom house, it could be at least $390,000 in U.S. dollars. So it’s really true that whatever “it” is, you can find “it” on eBay. This has got to be the biggest “it” ever, if not one of them!

Palm gains more losses by the million, delays release of Palm Treo 800w until summer

Sad news for Palm Treo and Windows Mobile fans: Palm CEO Ed Colligan recently announced a $31.5 million net loss for Palm and said that “new Windows Mobile Treos” are “not coming out this quarter,” then follows it up with saying the new Windows Mobile Treo smart phone should be available by the end of this year’s summer. I like how Mr. Colligan uses the term “new Windows Mobile Treos” (note that it’s Treos, with an S) when he could actually just as easily say that the Palm Treo 800W will be having a slight delay in coming out. I almost don’t want to believe that they can’t do anything about this and release their new WinMo Treos sooner, when they know very well that they need it to salvage their flailing enterprise.

High definition movie downloads within minutes

The Xbox 360 is the first gaming console to feature high definition content, only to be usurped by the PS3 when the latter was released a year later (in terms of technology, not available library and titles). The demise of Toshiba’s hd dvd format also made the Xbox 360 lose out in terms of high definition content, but thankfully that drought is pretty short lived considering Virgin Media and Microsoft have just announced that by the time the year is about to turn over to 2009, Xbox 360 owners will be able to download high definition movies from the Xbox Live marketplace using a supported broadband service, taking anywhere from 15 minutes to half an hour. Now that’s extremely fast by any standards, and you will be able to enjoy a fair number of movies the next day simply by leaving your Xbox 360 turned on overnight.

To date, a Virgin Media spokesperson has shed light that Virgin Media’s 50MB broadband service will be made available to over nine millions homes by the end of 2008 - that number makes up more than 70% of Virgin Media’s entire network if you’re a stickler for statistics. Unfortunately, there is no word on pricing and availability for the services, but we do know that full high definition movie downloads through Xbox Live takes a quarter of an hour at best, which is actually less time than driving out to a nearby store, looking for the movie of your choice among numerous aisles, waiting for your turn at the checkout counter, and ultimately driving back to your home (don’t forget to add to the cost of gas!).

This Easter will see Xbox Live subscribers getting a treat of 5 blockbuster movies for 100 MS points a pop - that’s roughly 85p when converted to Great Britain Pounds. These movies can be rented in both HD and SD formats, but chances are people will opt for the latter if they’re already rockin’ to great high definition games on their Xbox 360.

Torrented videos playing on a TV near you, thanks Myka

If you torrent a lot, then you will be happy to hear about this new product by Myka. Usually, whatever we download we end up watching on our computer screen, but sometimes we just want to watch it on the bigger screen of our big screen TV. To do this, people often burn it on a DVD, or if they have a video ipod or any other PMP, they could convert the video to put it on that and then play on the TV. All of the above can become annoying and time consuming. Apple saw that people had a hard time with this and designed the Apple TV. Now this helped some people, but you would have to buy the videos of iTunes in order for this to work.

Myka, now realized that many people torrent over buying videos the legal way such as through iTunes. They then designed their own, which is product similar to AppleTV. Basically, you can connect the Myka unit using internet LAN or Wi-Fi. You can even connect using Composite, S-Video, or SPDIF. It sells in a few models including 80GB, 160GB or 500GB hard drives. I think 80GB is enough as long as you delete your videos off the Myka as soon as your done watching them, but I guess if you have a ton of videos and don’t feel like deleting them then the 500GB is probably your best option. It even comes with pre-installed BitTorrent software, meaning you can download videos directly from the web and avoiding using your computer as a middleman. This could free valuable computer memory. Prices, so far, are a little on the high side as they range from $299 to $459, which is a little more than AppleTV. However, I really like the idea of this product and if you torrent a lot then you might want to consider purchasing it.
