HTC’s Touch Dual will debut in the US this quarter

Today at CTIA 2008, HTC announced that the HTC Touch Dual will be made available in the U.S. starting this quarter. If you recall, last year saw the arrival of the HTC Touch, a touchscreen-based smartphone rocking WinMo 6.0, Wi-Fi, 3G, and the TouchFLO user-interface under the hood. The HTC Touch Dual is a new iteration of that previous device, now offering the added convenience of a slide-out keypad and an updated OS with Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. But if you’re a mobile computing warrior, don’t get too excited. It looks like they took out the Wi-Fi feature from this baby.

All differences set aside, the HTC Touch Dual is worthy of some praise of its own. After all, it’s going to be one of the first few devices running Windows Mobile 6.1, and it will be fully integrated with HTC’s proprietary TouchFLO technology, their answer to Apple’s multi-touch.

The HTC Touch Dual will feature a 400MHz Qualcomm processor, 256MB of ROM and 128MB or SDRAM, a 2.6-inch touch-sensitive TFT-LCD screen, 3G, HSDPA, and GSM/GPRS/EDGE connectivity, as well as Bluetooth, a MiniUSB port, dual cameras and a MicroSD card slot. A 5-way navigational pad also sits between the call and end keys up front, for you to run to in case you get tired of the touch-based TouchFLO user interface. Be sure to check out more HTC updates and announcements here on Gadgetell as CTIA 2008 continues. Continue reading for the full HTC Touch Dual press release.

Debuting in the United States, the HTC Touch Dual Incorporates an Intuitive Touch Screen, Slide-Out Keypad and Windows Mobile 6.1 Software

HTC offers customers an enhanced mobile experience through the introduction of Windows Mobile 6.1 software updates for a variety of HTC devices.

LAS VEGAS — April 1, 2008 — HTC Corp. (TAIEX: 2498; “HTC”), a global leader in smartphone design and manufacturing, revealed that the popular HTC Touch Dual™ will debut in the United States this quarter. Announced today at the Cellular Telecommunication and Internet Association (CTIA) Wireless 2008 spring conference, the HTC Touch Dual™ combines an intuitive touch screen with integrated TouchFLO™ technology and slide-out keypad and Microsoft Corp.’s Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional software, making it easier for customers to communicate on the go.

“HTC has witnessed incredible support and demand for the Touch product portfolio, and we are pleased to provide our customers with the opportunity to experience additional iterations of the Touch product family,” said Jason Mackenzie, vice president of HTC America. “The Touch Dual will be among the first devices in the United States to run Windows Mobile 6.1 and will be followed by a range of 6.1 updates for several other HTC products.”

Software Upgrades Available on HTC Devices

In partnership with Microsoft and key mobile operator partners, HTC will continue to extend the functionality of many current HTC devices both in the United States and abroad by providing Windows Mobile 6.1 updates. Windows Mobile 6.1, an update to Windows Mobile 6, provides new timesaving features, easier phone navigation and management, stronger security safeguards, and support for Microsoft System Center mobile device Manager 2008. Some of HTC’s most popular smartphones including the Touch by HTC and Mogul by HTC from Sprint, AT&T Tilt, Alltel Wireless’ HTC Touch and PPC6800, and the HTC TyTN II, will be among the first of many devices available for a Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade.

Supporting existing customers and enhancing their experiences continues to be a focus for HTC; Sprint and HTC recently provided an update for the popular Mogul by HTC, making it the industry’s first EV-DO Rev. A-capable handset while also enabling additional GPS functionality.

“Windows Mobile enhances people’s lives by providing them with an experience that keeps them close to what’s important to them — anywhere, anytime,” said John O’Rourke, general manager of the Mobile Communications Business, Microsoft. “HTC has a history of providing a great selection of popular Windows Mobile phones, and we are pleased to bring the latest in software to a range of its products around the world.”

HTC Touch Dual Availability and Features

Best Buy will be the first to offer the HTC Touch Dual, which will be available through select Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile retail outlets, online at BestBuy.com and htc.com.

Nokia N99 concept resurfaces, this time in black

Last year we saw N99 in a QWERTY avatar, bulky as hell. A year on and the concept seems to have gone under some serious work, which has frankly left me bamboozled. It seems that N99 paid a visit to a surgeon and got itself a mean and lean makeover. The concept has resurfaced in a shiny black form and plainly stated looks far better off.

As far as the specs are concerned, there’s the 8 MP camera, 16 GB of internal memory, a 3.2-inch display and GPS. Add to that a support for Mp3, DivX, MPEG, AVI, and to top everything off WiFi; now, there’s a mouth-watering proposition. That out of the way, the mystery behind the QWERTY keypad vs the D-pad still remains. Hopefully, that’ll be cleared soon enough. Lean black machine over the too common QWERTY device, any goddamn day!

Hands-on with the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition

Having trouble telling the difference between this and a garden-variety N810? Yeah, don’t worry about it — that’s okay, and it’s actually by design. We had an opportunity to tool around with Nokia’s just-announced N810 WiMAX Edition today, and it stays very true to the original N810’s formula, substituting a darker case and keyboard (both of which look very handsome, by the way), and physically, that’s about it. The real magic happens deep within this thing’s innards, where the addition of a WiMAX radio keeps things speedy when WiFi hotspots are out of reach and Bluetooth tethering to a 3G phone is too much of a hassle. The software necessary to support XOHM activation isn’t complete yet, but Nokia’s reps tell us that the process of signing up for WiMAX service will be seamless and entirely doable from the N810 itself — no pesky phone calls or visits to a store necessary. They likened it to purchasing hotel internet service; there’ll probably be hourly, daily, or continuous subscriptions available, making it possible to only shell out XOHM coin when the situation demands it. It works just like any other data connection on the device, too, so getting your wide-area broadband on is pretty much as painless as it could possibly be. Check out some shots (including a side-by-side with the original N810) in the gallery!

Artificial (and rechargeable) Candles

People that are more used to the traditional route won’t enjoy artificial candles, but the 21st century generation is suppose to like them.

What makes these candles unique is having a LED light bulb, instead of being a normal candle. Thanks to a microchip located inside the bulb, the flickering light effect is easily reproduced by the LED.

With a full charge you get 12 hours of light in a form of a fake candle, what more can you ask for?

The Rechargeable Outdoor Candles cost 45.

The four candle recharging base is included.

LCD TV Prototype Pave The Future

Plasma TVs might beat out on LCDs when it comes to image quality, but next-gen LCD TVs ought to do much better as they bring brighter colors and a virtually infinite contrast ratio to the table, thanks to the efforts of Dolby and Sim2. Their new prototype LCD TV features a high dynamic range which utilizes a backlight unit from Sim2 comprising of 1,838 LEDs, capable of maintaining 1080p resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio. The prototype has been rated at 4,000 cd/m2 in terms of brightness, and has a uniform luminance of 95% throughout the display. According to Dolby, this TV is able to deliver a “picture quality that matches real-world visual perception of depth, detail, and color.” No word on pricing or availability, but it won’t be cheap - I can guarantee you that.

Creative: We’ll Support Third-Party Driver Development

Sound card maker Creative Labs, which warned driver modder/hacker Daniel Kawakami to stop distributing fixed versions of its broken Vista drivers, ‘fessed up to its PR disaster today and says it doesn’t want to be a spoilsport.

"We have read the strong feedback about Creative’s forum post regarding driver development by Daniel_k and other outside parties.  Creative’s message posted on our behalf by our Company spokesperson tried to address our concern about the improper distribution of certain software which is the property of other companies.  However, we did not make it as clear as we would have liked that we do support driver development by independent third parties.  The huge task of developing driver updates to accommodate the many changes in the Vista operating system and the extensive testing required, including the lengthy Vista certification requirements for audio, makes it very difficult for Creative to develop updates for all past products.  Outside developers have been very helpful to Creative and our customers by developing updates for many of our Sound Blaster products, and we do support and appreciate these efforts.  This however does not extend to the unauthorized distribution of other companies’ property.  We hope to work out a mutually agreeable method for working with Daniel_k in supporting his efforts in driver development.  Going forward, we are committed to doing a better job of working more closely with third parties to support their development for our products and our customers."

Why don’t you just stop deliberately crippling your official Vista drivers?

Microsoft to Have a Full Web Browser in 2008

CTIA 2008 – Microsoft claims that it will have a fully-featured web browser in 2008, more precisely in the third quarter. Full support for Flash and JavaScript/AJAX are particularly important.

That’s good news, but to be honest, the smartness of a mobile browser is only part of the problem. The bigger issue is how big de display resolution is and we all know that pocket devices have limitations. The iphone, or even better, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 (photo gallery) get closer to the limit. The latter offers an 800 pixel wide display, which mimics low-end desktop monitors.

Both issues (size and software) should and will be tackled simultaneously, but let’s not forget that, in the end, building a site designed for small displays is a better solution.
