Get paid to date

Now I know that everyone loves to get paid, but it gets even better if you’re being paid for what you love to do the best, because you won’t feel the time passing by while you’re having fun! If you happen to be a social butterfly, how does getting paid to date sound to you? Chief Executive Officer Leo Cono has announced the Beta launch of a new incentive-based social networking and free online dating site: www.YouLoveMe.com. For those who have given up on searching for their significant other in the real world and have turned to the solace of Internet dating, rejoice! YouLoveMe.com is a 100% Free Dating Site, so there is no worry about forking out a single penny to enjoy its social networking features.

So far extensive research by the founders of YouLoveMe.com showed that the cost associated with 4 dates a month average $345.00 dollars. That amount of money adds up courtesy of the dinners, movies, transportation expenses, the obligatory candies or flowers on the first or second date. As a member of YouLoveMe.com, you will be given space where you can place your own banner ad on the MyPage section. Each click would mean some dough rolling in your direction, so that those can be used to defray some of the more expensive dating outings. Just make sure you’ve got a marketable self lest you stumble in this area, leading you further down the wormhole of greater depression.

According to Cono, “YouLoveMe.com takes into account and encompasses the best elements of the dating scene. It highlights and amplifies what PlentyofFish.com has accomplished in the free online dating space. Furthermore; since YouLoveMe.com is mixing Free Online Dating with Social Networking, this model has the potential for greater membership growth because social networking sites have more members in comparison to dating web sites. An example is MySpace with 300 million registered members versus Match.com with 15 million members”.

TIPA Photography Award Winners Announced: Nikon Goes Away Happy

The Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) has announced to results of the annual camera Oscars. The European awards are coveted by manufacturers, mostly because they get to stick the TIPA logo on the camera box and thereby shift more units.

This year, Nikon scooped the Pro and Expert categories with the D3 and D300 respectively. We know that both are good, and probably the two main reasons that Nikon is gaining ground against its old rival Canon. Canon, though, also managed to win a gong for the best “advanced” DSLR with its EOS 450D, not a bad feat as for a camera that started shipping a few days ago.

Check the link for the full list of winners.

News Corp hired hacker to pirate DISH Network access cards

by Nilay Patel, posted Apr 24th 2008 at 8:33PMDISH Network and News Corp’s satellite subisdiary NDS Group in California have been involved in an industrial espionage lawsuit for years now, but there was some big drama in court today: a hacker by the name of Christopher Tarnovsky (who used the handle “Big Gun,” among others) testified that NDS hired him to create a device called “the stinger” that could reprogram DISH Network access cards. DISH lawyers say the plan was to flood the market with hacked cards, which would cost the satellite company $900M in revenue and repair costs. Unsurprisingly, NDS (which supplies DirecTV, among others), says that it hired Tarovsky only to reverse-engineer DISH’s cards for competitive reasons, and Tarnovsky himself says that he believes “someone is trying to set him up.” Sure, sure — but no one’s explaining why he was mailed mobile electronics from Canada with $20K in cash stashed inside, or why he was officially on the payroll of HarperCollins, a totally different NewCorp subsidiary, for more than 10 years. Sketchy sketchy — and we thought satellite hacking was dead.

Want to save XP? Send Microsoft feedback, says Ballmer

Alas, there may be yet a glimmer of hope in saving Windows XP according to a recent report by Reuters. During a recent news conference in Belgium, Microsoft bigwig Steve Ballmer said that customer input could be the key to rescuing XP from its current end-of-life schedule.

“XP will hit an end-of-life. We have announced one. If customer feedback varies, we can always wake up smarter, but right now, we have a plan for end-of-life for new XP shipments,” stated Ballmer during the news conference. So it would seem, according to Ballmer, not enough people have spoken up to change Microsoft’s mind on the destiny of XP.

As the fate of the operating system stands now, XP will only be sold on new Ultra Low-Cost PCs beginning July 1st with XP Mainstream Support continuing until April of 2009. After that, security patches will continue until April of 2014. Then that’s all for XP folks.

Could it be possible that enough people can rally support around XP to get Microsoft to change its mind in just two months? We shall see. Until then, the clock on XP is still ticking away.

Vamoose! away cigarette odor

I am happy to report that I didn’t personally test this product, a tobacco odor elimination product, because no one I know smokes. And that’s a good thing.

But Vamoose tells me: “Independent lab testing of the Vamoose 1808T Tobacco Fabric Spray demonstrated that when compared to other leading fabric sprays claiming ‘tobacco odor elimination,’ Vamoose was the only product that demonstrated no residual tobacco odors present in the fabric even several weeks after the application.” So there.

The power behind the permanent removal of tobacco odors is Novexium which “molecularly combines with the tar and nicotine molecules deposited by smoking and converts them into inert matter.” So you know it’s working, a scent is created (unless you get the fragrance free option) - Fresh Scent, New Car Scent, and Leather Scent.

If you need to spray someone who smokes, buy it for $29.99 for the 32 ounce size at Amazon. (Spraying people with the product is not recommened by the manufacturer however.)

British Ad-Supported Phone Service Gains 100,000 Subscribers

One day, we will pay for nothing. All goods and services will be ad-supported. This will continue until the only advertisements are for more ad-supported services. Then, late one Monday afternoon, sometime in 2012, the Singularity will occur, snakes will swallow their own tails and, born from the collapse of reality, a second big-bang will birth the Googleverse.

At least, that’s the first thing that popped into my mind when reading that in Britain, a free, ad-supported mobile phone service has hit 100,000 subscribers in just six months. Blyk gives away text messages and calls in return for text and video ads (this is one case where it pays to have a crappy low tech cellphone). According to Blyk, the ads are getting a huge 29% response rate, an order of magnitude better than most other advertising.

Whether this means that cellphone ads really work, or that the ads themselves are just particularly well made, we don’t know. What we do know is that the king of the new reality will be George Forman, Lord of the Infomercial.

DISH Networks teams with Alcatel-Lucent for DVB-SH trial in US

by Darren Murph, posted Apr 24th 2008 at 4:49PMAh ha! So this is what DISH Network was planning on doing with its recently-purchased swath of spectrum. Just under two months after analysts pondered what the firm was thinking throwing out bids for a smidgen of bandwidth — and not even a fortnight after the ICO G1 successfully launched in order to bring DVB-SH to America — out comes the whole truth. The satcaster is teaming up with Alcatel-Lucent to test the Digital Video Broadcasting - Satellite services to Handhelds technology right here in the US, with A-L providing the equipment, test tools and training. The evaluation will be taking place at a DISH facility in Atlanta from May until August, with the ultimate goal to “validate the performance and cost-efficiency of the DVB-SH standard.” As expected, we’re only given crumbs of information as to where this partnership may lead, but we should be much more clear on everything by the time the summer concludes.

Helio Devices get Push Gmail

Helo users will be able to receive push Gmail on their Fin, Mysto or Ocean after Google decided on Helio to be the first carrier to utilize such a service. Set up is a snap, as you just need to go to your Inbox and select Send/Receive. A message asking whether you want to enable new email alerts will appear, so all you need to do is hit yes and everything would be all right. Nice touch, and this will likely appeal more towards those who constantly want to stay on top of their email.
